BC省的新西敏斯市(New Westminster，又称二埠)与09年被列为加拿大国家级受保护遗址的巴克维尔(Barkerville)，一南一北，都是早期华人开拓者及华裔淘金客的重要地点，这两处也是百年前华人淘金路线的起点和终点。
19世纪中叶的淘金热，起源于1858年。当得知新金矿消息后，美国旧金山的华人以至中国广东台山开平四邑等地的居民，纷纷涌来加入掘金行列，使得当地的人口激增，直到淘金热在1870年退潮。
19世纪70年代，太平洋铁路的开工修建，使得华裔再次蜂拥而至。据1881年人口普查数据，BC省当时非原住民人口当中，华人占两成，本地多个华人家族，都曾参与19世纪中的卑诗淘金事业。据文献记载，全盛时期，巴克维尔镇居住了6,000个华人。

巴克维尔洪门致公堂是清末海外华人自发的社团组织，会所是一栋二层小楼，不仅新老华人移民在这里得到生活上的照顾，一些重要的华人传统节庆活动也在这里举办，侨领们更是在此筹集捐款，用于支持在中国发生的推翻清朝的革命以及抗日战争。也曾帮华人寄汇款至中国，有助振兴广东侨乡经济。
